    SPECIFICATIONS

    The 7B53A and 7B53AN Dual Time Bases are recommended for use with the 7400, 7500, 7600 and Storage FAMILIES to privide bandwidth/sweep speed compatibility. Both time bases have identical characteristics except the 7B53AN does not incorporate CRT READOUT.

    These Dual Time Bases feature four sweep display modes:
    Normal, Intensified Delaying, Delayed and Mixed.

    Normal Sweep (nondelayed) is selected when the DLY'D TIME/DIV switch is pushed in and set to the same sweep rate as the TIME/DIV switch. The switches will latch in this mode.

    Intensified Delaying Sweep is accomplished by pulling out the DELAYED SWEEP TIME/DIV knob. The delaying (main) sweep is intensified for a period of time determined by the delayed sweep setting. The intensified zone may be initiated at any point on the delaying sweep determined by the DELAY TIME MULT (DTM). The DELAYING and DELAYED TIME/DIV controls can be independently set. MAIN TRIGGERING controls are used to control the delaying sweep.

    Delayed Sweep is selected by pushing in the DELAYED SWEEP TIME/DIV knob. The intensified segment of the delaying sweep is now displayed over the full 10 div of the CRT. The delayed sweep may be operated in either a "triggered" or "runs-after-delay" mode.

    Mixed Sweep is accomplished by pulling the VARIABLE knob out, combining the slower and faster sweep speeds into one display. The main sweep is displayed at the slower speed from the beginning of a selectable point on the main sweep. Past this point, the sweep is displayed at the faster of the two sweep speeds. The intensified zone, delayed sweep and mixed sweep may be initiated at any point on the main sweep determined by the DLY TIME MULT.

    TV SYNC

    Option 5, TV Sync Separator Triggering -- Permits stable internal Line or Field rate triggering from displayed composite video or composite sync waveforms. Conventional waveform displays and measurements can be made from standard broadcast or closed-circuit TV systems, domestic or overseas, with up to 1201-line, 60-Hz field rates. Individual lines can be displayed with the delayed sweep features. The wide range of delayed sweeps permits accurate alternate-frame color-burst observations in the PAL color system.

    DELAYING SWEEP

    Sweep Rate -- 0.05 μs/div to 5 s/div in 25 steps (1-2-5 sequence). 5 ns/div is the fastest calibrated sweep rate, obtained with the X10 MAGNIFIER. The uncalibrated VARIABLE is continuous between steps and to 12.5 s/div. The variable control is internally switchable between main, delayed sweep and variable main sweep holdoff.

    Delay Time Multiplier Range -- 0 to 10 times the DELAY TIME/DIV setting from 5 s/div to 1 μs/div.

    Differential Delay Time Measurement Accuracy -- 5 s/div to 1 s/div; (1.4% of measurement + 0.3% of full scale); 0.5 s/div to 1 μs/div; (0.7% of measurement + 0.3% of full scale).
    Full scale is 10 times the DELAY TIME/DIV setting. Accuracy spplies over the center 8 major DTM divisions from + 15°C to +35°C.

    Jitter -- 1 part or less in 20,000 of X10 the TIME/DIV setting.

    Single Sweep -- Triggering requirements are the same as normal sweep. When triggered, sweep generator produces one sweep only until manually or remotely reset.

    Internal Trigger Jitter -- 1 ns or less at 75 MHz

    External Trigger Input -- Max input voltage is 500 V (DC + peak AC), 500 V P-P AC at 1 kHz or less. Input R and C is 1 MΩ within 2%, 20 pF within 2 pF. LEVEL range is at least + 1.5 V to - 1.5 V in EXT, at least + 15 V to - 15 V in EXT ÷ 10.

    DELAYED SWEEP

    Sweep Rate -- 0.05 μs/div to 0.5 s/div in 22 steps (1-2-5 sequence). 5 ns/div is the fastest calibrated sweep rate, obtained with the X10 MAGNIFIER. The uncalibrated VARIABLE is continuous between steps to at least 1.25 s/div and is switchable between the main, delayed sweep and variable main sweep holdoff.

    Delayed Sweep Gate -- Output voltage is approximately +3.5 V into at least 10 kΩ shunted by 100 pF or less. Risetime is 50 ns or less, output R is 1 kΩ withing 10%. Gate is available at the DLY'D TRIG IN connector when the delayed sweep source switch is set to INT.

    OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - CONTROLS AND CONNECTORS

    General

    All controls required for the operation of the 7B53A/7B53AN, except the Variable Selector (P140) and the Dly'd Sweep Gate Out connector (P613), are located on the front panel of the instrument. To make full use of the capabilities of this instrument, the operator should be familiar with the function and use of each control. A brief description of the front-panel controls and connectors is given here.

    1. Main Triggering Controls

    Level. Select the amplitude point on the trigger signal where sweep triggering occurs.

    Slope. Two-position switch permits triggering on the positive-going or negative-going portion of the main triggering signal.

    TRIG'D. Light indicates that the main sweep is triggered and will produce a display.

    MODE. Pushbutton switches select the operating mode for the main triggering circuits.

    COUPLING. Pushbutton switches select the method of coupling the triggering signal to the main triggering circuits.

    SOURCE. Pushbutton switches select the source of the main triggering signal.

    2. Sweep Controls

    TIME/DIV OR DLY TIME. (This is the knob with the clear plastic skirt - brackets indicate main sweep rate or delay time, depending on Display Mode). Selects the sweep rate of the main sweep generator.

    DLY'D Time/Division. (This is the knob marked PULL FOR INTENS - dot indicates sweep rate)). Selects the sweep rate of the delayed sweep generator and selects the MAIN SWP, INTEN, and DLY'D SWP Display Modes.

    VARIABLE. (This is the red CAL knob). Combination switch and control provides variable main sweep rates, variable delayed sweep rates, or variable main sweep holdoff:
    Depending on the connection of the multi-pin connector P140 (internal). The VARIABLE control may also be pulled outward to select the MIXED Display Mode, when operating in the DLY'D SWP Display Mode.

    Variable Sweep Rates:
    Variable sweep rates for the main or delayed sweep generators may be obtained when P140 is properly connected. When the front-panel VARIABLE control is rotated out of the detent position, the VARIABLE control is activated for variable sweep rates (uncalibrated).

    Variable Holdoff:
    Variable main sweep holdoff can be obtained when P140 is connected for this function. When the VARIABLE control is rotated out of the detent position, the holdoff duration may be varied. Variable holdoff is used to provide a stable display of repetitive complex waveforms.

    Display Mode. Four display modes can be selected by the following switch settings:

    MAIN SWP: The MAIN SWP mode (non-delayed) is selected when the TIME/DIV OR DLY TIME switch and the DLY'D Time/Division Switch are locked together at the same sweep rate.

    INTEN: The INTEN mode, a function of the main and delayed sweeps, is selected when the DLY'D Time/Division switch is pulled out. In this mode, a portion of the main sweep is intensified during the time that the delayed sweep runs.

    DLY'D SWP: The DLY'D SWP mode is selected when the DLY'D Time/Division switch is pulled out, rotated in the INTEN mode for the desired delayed sweep rate, and then pushed in. In this mode, the delayed sweep is displayed at a rate determined by the DLY'D Time/Division switch at the end of each delay period, as determined by TIME/DIV OR DLY TIME switch and the DELAY TIME MULT dial settings.

    MIXED: The MIXED mode is selected when the DLY'D SWP mode is selected and the VARIABLE knob is pulled out. In the MIXED mode, the main sweep is displayed on the CRT to a point determined by the DELAY TIME MULT dial; the remainder of the sweep is at the rate determined by the delayed sweep.

    SWP CAL. Screwdriver adjustment to match the gain of the 7B53A/7B53AN to the indicator oscilloscope for calibrated sweep rates.

    POSITION. Controls horizontal position of display.

    FINE. Provides precise control of horizontal positoin adjustment.

    MAG. Pushbutton switch selects X1 or X10 horizontal magnification.

    3. Delay Time Control

    DELAY TIME MULT. Provides variable sweep delay between 0.00 and 1.0 times the delay time indicated by the TIME/DIV or DLY TIME switch.

    4. Delayed Triggering Controls

    LEVEL. Selects the RUNS AFTER DLY TIME or Triggerable After Dly Time Modes, and the amplitude point at which the delayed sweep is triggered.

    SLOPE. Two-position switch permits triggering on the positive-going or negative-going portion of the delayed triggering signal.

    COUPLING. Two-position switch selects the method of coupling the triggering signal to the delayed triggering circuits.

    SOURCE. Two-position switch to select the source of the delayed triggering signal.

    5. Input/Output Connectors

    MAIN TRIG IN OR AMP IN. Front-panel BNC connector serves two different input functions.

    MAIN TRIG IN: External Trigger input for the main triggering circuit. The SOURCE switch for MAIN TRIGGERING must be set to EXT or EXT ÷ 10 position and the TIME/DIV or DLY'D TIME switch set to any position except AMPL.

    AMPL: When the TIME/DIV OR DLY'D TIME switch is set to AMPL and the MAIN TRIGGERING SOURCE switch is set to the EXT or EXT ÷ 10 position, this connector serves as an External Horizontal Input.

    DLY'D TRIG IN. Front-panel BNC connector serves two input functions.

    DLY'D TRIG IN: When the Delayed Triggering SROUCE switch is set to EXT, this connector serves as an external trigger input for the delayed triggering circuit.

    Delayed Sweep Gate Out: When the DLY'D TRIG SOURCE switch is set to INT, P613 is properly connected, and the delayed sweep generator is running (INTEN, DLY'D SWP, or MIXED Diaplay Mode) the DLY'D TRIG IN connector serves as a Delayed Sweep Gate Output. The Delayed Sweep Gate signal is a rectangular positive-going pulse with approx 3.0 volts amplitude and pulse width coincident with the delayed sweep.
